. bill karins tracking this storm very closely for us and how does it look right snow. >> the storm weakened from a category 4 to a 3. looks like we're going through another burst of intensification. you can see it right there. a clearing of an eye and that is usually the storm is tightening itself up and the winds will increase slightly during the day today. warm water out ahead of it and we do not expect much more weakening by the time it gets out towards north carolina. the hurricane hunter aircraft is just on its way in. now the next storm, the next hurricane hunter aircraft will be in there probably another three hours from now. until then we'll have to look and get estimates on the satellite of how strong earl is. the wind field 125 mi-mile-per-r winds. as we go into friday, our computer models, we have been watching these closely. when you see the pink line to the right, that would be a hard-glancing blow. the line all the way to the left in the blue would be huge problems. we'll end up with something in the middle and that's what the hurricane forecast is as of now. cat 3 to

. but they do extend, big waves for many miles. the eye of the storm is disappearing on us. we could be undergoing an eyewall replacement cycle and that may not have time to fully wind back up. now the waves are probably the biggest story with this storm. the beach erosion is going to be incredible. we have 14-foot waves off of hatteras, 13-foot waves off of wilmington. the wave action is going to be incredible going all the way up the east coast to cape cod during the day tomorrow. hurricane warnings cape cod, hurricane warnings from virginia beach southward to just outside of jacksonville, north carolina near camp lejeune. as far as our commuter models go, everything is taking it offshore at this point. the only close call is out there at nantucket, martha's vineyard, chatam. it should be a category 3 and then a category 2 by the time it's south of new england, weakening to a category 1 as it impacts either down east maine, they're probably going to get hit good saturday morning. the tropical storm force winds, the worst where stephanie is located, and then as everyone drives to wo

weather center tracking all of this for us this morning. so are they still in a situation where the waters are still rising now? >> no, the river at least at portage did crest last night. but it's going to remain above flood stage for quite some time. not only across wisconsin, but southern and central parts of minnesota. we've got all these rivers that are actually draining into the mississippi. and we're going to see some issues, i think, downstream from there, as well. so that's issue number one. issue number two is -- more immediate concerns, what's going on in portage. here's where the river crested. the record is is 20.5 feet. it crested just above that last night. and now it's at about 20.2 feet. we're at near record strange. major flood stage, but not expected to come back down below flood stage really until late wednesday into thursday. so we've got quite some time before this river really gets below the danger zone. and what i mean by danger zone is, well, usually after a river crests, we can relax, but because of this situation where you have all of that pressure on this very, v

shot there, but we are expecting conditions to go downhill. now, what about the u.s.? are we going to see any impact here? you bet we are, the same we did with earl and danielle. we've got a high risk of rip currents here on the atlantic coast, particularly bad into the carolinas. another thing that we're keeping our eye on is that disturbance in the gulf of mexico. maybe a little moisture from karl got wrapped up in this, but this is an upper level disturbance. right now it doesn't have a circulation, so it's not a tropical storm or a tropical depression. it's a wave or cluster of thunderstorms. the concern here is not necessarily that it has much time to turn into a tropical storm, but it a es going to bring torrential downpours. the rain from houston toward the south and west. flood watches in effect here. 3 to 5 inches expected and texas has been hard hit with a couple of different tropical depressions and storms already in the last couple of weeks. so adding more insult to injury with all this moisture, we're going to likely see river flooding as well as flash flooding from so

of the storm, dodged a bullet is what she said to us this morning. no lives lost and what seems to be only minimal damage, obviously as you can see from here, some flooding. the main road was flooded for a couple miles because of a reverse storm surge. while the threat is over in north carolina, they are boarding up in new york, especially on long island. the eastern tip of it, officials in east hampton and other parts of long island are warning beach-goers that waves could reach as high as ten feet. so they say it is best to stay away from the water until the storm passes. in massachusetts, people are also getting prepared as earl approaches. while it's expected to remain off shore, it could still bring heavy rain, high winds and coastal flooding. forecasters have reduced the hurricane warning area for parts of the state. our coverage of hurricane earl continues with brianna keilar, live in ocean city, maryland. reynolds wolf tracking the laftest on the storm. brianna, you are at ocean city. we have been watching and talking to you since early this morning. i'm -- there you are. there is

downgraded to a category 1 storm. nbc's michelle franzen joins us now live from chatham, massachusetts. what is the scene like there? >> certainly, the preparation the last two days, preparing for the worst what could have been a direct hit, shaping up to be a direct hit from hurricane earl here on cape cod that is not shaping up to be the case at this hour. however, still a significant storm, as bill just mentioned a got category 1 significant winds and nantucketed expected to still take the brunt of hurricane earl. right now though, very calm, in the bay, a protected area of chatham here. there are still some people out on the beach here, taking stock of this calm weather before the storm rolls n we have had had a shower just a short time ago of the outer bands of this storm but certainly a lot of people were preparing, boarding up their houses, moving boats to safer areas and also just stocking up. >> just got some water and mostly dry goods just in case refridge rater is down. >>> it is chaos, utter, utter kay, i don't we were just in there standing in line for literally 20 minutes. peop
